Keep walking

Our real destination is the City of God, the New Jerusalem, built by God in heaven.

The Word speaks often about our spiritual walk.

Walking in the Spirit, walking in love, walking on the narrow road that leads to life.

This all speaks of a journey, of advancement, and of going somewhere in particular.

The writer to the Hebrews speaks of us being sojourners in the earth, people without a fixed homeland, travelling towards the New Jerusalem, the City of our God.

Above all, this is a faith walk. We are trusting wholeheartedly in God, in His Word and that we are led by His Spirit.

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Hebrews 11:8-10

Abraham is spoken of as the father of faith to those who believe. He is a prime example of seeking a homeland not made with human hands.

Unknown journey

Isn’t it interesting that Abraham, or Abram as he was then known, ‘went out, not knowing where he was going?’

He simply upped and left on the Word of God. He was to head towards a certain place, Haran which ultimately led to Canaan, but he was travelling in a direction rather than with a specific location in mind.

Ultimately God would show him the Promised Land, but even this was a temporal address. His real destination was the City built by God in the heavens, and, by faith, Abraham knew this.

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

Hebrews 11:13-16

So it is with us, that is, those of us who believe and follow Jesus. Our City is that same City of God.

And how we get there is also important. As we walk we are to walk in love. As we walk we are to walk in the Spirit. As we walk we are to journey by faith.

We have a homeland, but not is not here. We have a destination, but it lies ahead of us. We have an eternal home, but we are simply on the way.
