If only people knew the power of the name of Jesus when it is used in faith by His people.
The reality is that the name of Jesus is the greatest name in the universe. It has been given to God’s saints as a key to great anointing and power.
Saints, in this context, are those who are born again, not the unbiblical idea of a handful of people who have died and been canonised by the religious church. A true saint is any born again believer, a saved person, and this salvation by grace leads to sanctification; being made a saint (1 Cor.1:2).
We who are saved and remain alive in the earth have also been given the mighty name of Jesus to use in declaring His Word and works, as long as we are still here. We are sent to the world to proclaim His name to everyone we meet (1 John 3:23).
The name given
Jesus gave us His name as part of the armoury as believers, and as His followers. We use His name as His representatives in the earth. His name unlocks many doors when we speak in faith.
If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
John 14:14
Here Jesus is saying that we can apply His name as if He is Himself making the request, and, further to this, he will aid us in accomplishing the task we request. Do we need a second witness on this? It’s available to us.
And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
John 14:13
In effect, Jesus repeats Himself in the same conversation to assure us that we can ask anything in His name and He will make it happen for us and through us, as we will see. When we use His name the Father is glorified in the Son. Jesus is waiting for us to ask in His name (Luke 11:9).
Let’s qualify this by adding that anything we ask in His name should also be according to His will, not just according to our own desires apart from Him. Of course, if we are genuinely operating in His name we will be asking as if He were asking, knowing His will beforehand, therefore we will be asking something He would Biblically, not some unbiblical request.
His will is His Word
Can His will be known? According to scripture it can.
Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
1 John 5:14
How, then, can we know His will? The answer is simple. We know His will by His Word. He is the Word made flesh. He showed us the Word as well as spoke it (John 10:38). He did nothing of Himself (John 5:30). Only what the Father showed Him (John 5:19), and the Father did the works through Him. He demonstrated the Word through His works (John 5:36).
His Word for us is revealed to us in scripture. His Word and His will must be one. Anything we can see in and of His Word that applies to the situation we want to pray about we can access and apply.
Do we have an example of this in scripture? We do. Acts 3:1-10.
Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple; who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms. And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, "Look at us." So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. Then Peter said, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God. Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
His name through faith in His name
So Peter and John used the name of Jesus in place of alms-giving, and the man was immediately healed. Peter goes on to qualify what has happened and exactly how this man was made whole of his lameness.
His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
Acts 3:16
He is talking about the name of Jesus. His name through faith in His name. So the name of Jesus had the power to make the lame man strong when it was applied to the area of his need and it is received by faith in the same name.
Notice that this didn’t take place because Peter and John were apostles, but simply because they used the name of Jesus as believers. This is the key. Not their rank or position, but their faith in the name as instructed by Jesus.
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Mark 16:15-18
These signs follow those who believe. In Jesus’ name the signs will follow them.
Confirmation
After Peter and John had ministered to the lame man and he was raised up, the authorities were afraid of the power of the name of Jesus and began the process of attempting to silence them and abolish that name. But Peter stood up and reiterated His declaration that the name of the risen Christ had the power to raise this man up.
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.
Acts 4:8-10
You see, the concept that the name of Jesus has the power to bring deliverance and healing when it is applied in the correct context will always be challenged by those who have ulterior motives, or whose position or doctrine are challenged by the truth.
However, the authorities had no leg to stand on because the man stood before them healed. The evidence was plain to see and the deliverance took place in front of the people on a public thoroughfare.
The authorities recognised that these men had been with Jesus, and the same miracles were taking place that they’d seen and heard when Jesus walked the earth just a few months before they crucified Him.
And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
Acts 4:14
Then the authorities attempted to shut them down and forbid them to use the name of Jesus. That is how powerful and threatening the name of Jesus is to the principalities and powers of darkness. It is also why we need to stand just as the disciples did and bring our supplications before God in His name, including applying the name of Jesus to setting people free from the Oppressor.
The disciples stood as one and prayed.
“Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”
Acts 4:29-30
Through the name. Signs and wonders. Through the name of Jesus. When they prayed their prayer, the whole place where they were assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the Word of God with a renewed boldness.
The same name
We have been given the same name: the mighty name of Jesus. It’s not about position, or rank, or calling, or ability, or whether we are young or old in the Lord. It’s about the name. It’s about faith in the name. It is delegated responsibility and authority in the name of Jesus as His disciples. His name is available to all who believe, to give and to receive.
And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Colossians 3:17
When we know His Word, we will know His will, and we will be empowered to apply His will in His name.
That is why His name is so important to us, yesterday, today, and always.
